Fundy Complex owner Dean Kenley has received a promise of support from Digby town council in his request to extend hours of business by one hour during the Wharf Rat Rally, Scallop Days and the East Coast Classic.

Councilors voted Dec. 1 to provide a letter a letter of support for Kenley’s proposal to close at 3 a.m. rather than 2 a.m. on those 12 days. Jean Brittain was the only councilor opposing the motion.

The Nova Scotia Alcohol and Gaming Authority will makes the decision on whether he can extend business hours during the tourism-oriented events, but the endorsement of town council is expected to help his case.

The authority will also consider a recommendation by RCMP Staff-Sgt. Phil Barrett who opposed the later closing when Kenley made the same request last year.

In a Nov. 17 presentation to the town’s street, sewer and public property committee, Kenley said a similar request was granted in 2006 and 2007.

Kenley said he was told by then-mayor Frank Mackintosh that there were no additional policing costs to the town, and that the Courier reported ‘very well behaved crowds.’

Kenley said it is a challenging time for businesses, but closing an hour later during each of the three events could mean as much as $10,000 in income.

Last year’s Wharf Rat Rally drew an estimated 17,000 bikers to Digby.
