Community policing officer Const. Darrell McNeil visited Weymouth Consolidated School Thursday to remind students about Halloween safety.

“Students already know the rules to have a safe Halloween,” said McNeil. “They just need a friendly reminder.”

For the most part, children are out to have fun and get lots of candy but McNeil said that there is usually something going on that doesn’t follow the guidelines for a safe Halloween.

He cautioned students to be alert and pay attention to traffic and urged them to have a flashlight or wear light-coloured clothing in order to be seen.

McNeil said one of the biggest concerns of RCMP on Halloween involves children throwing eggs, using paintballs or firecrackers. It may not seem harmful, he said, but the practice can cause damage or injury.

Students were responsive to McNeil’s visit and were eager to share their knowledge of Halloween safety rules with their guest.

McNeil said he had similar visits with students at Barton Consolidated and Digby Elementary schools.
