Digby’s snow budget is pretty much where it was last year at this time.
Town clerk Tom Ossinger says that as of Thursday, Jan. 10, the town had spent 46 per cent of its salt budget - $24,700 out of $55,000.
Last year at the same time, the town had spent $23,400 on salt.
Labour costs related to snow removal this year have run to $6,400 and last year this time the town had spent $5,800.
“Maybe we just think we’ve had more snow this year,” said Ossinger. “We’ve been getting a lot at once but bigger storms mean less cost. You only have to salt once.
“When you get a little dusting here and a little dusting there, you are always running behind salting.”
The biggest year Ossinger has on recent record was 2002/ 2003 when the town budgeted $65,000 for salt but spent $73,000.
The next year, in February 2004, White Juan brought Nova Scotia to a standstill with 60 to 90 cm of snow. Digby had budgeted $68,000 for 2003/ 2004 but spent $56,000.
