Bear River Fire Hall will be warm and welcoming this winter if the community’s power should fail.

The Bear River hall has a new generator purchased with help from the Municipality of Digby, which provided $16,000 towards the cost of $24,000, which included installation.

There was also a $3,600 grant from the province and various fundraising activities to cover the remainder.

Area municipal councilor Jimmy MacAlpine, who is also one of the municipality’s EMO representatives, said that it’s important to be prepared. “A few days after it was installed there was a brief power failure,” he said, “and it came right away, so there’s no doubt that it’s working exactly as it should.”

The fire hall is one of several ‘warming stations’ designated by the Emergency Measures Organization of Nova Scotia. Others in this area include Digby Fire Hall and Digby Elementary School.

The generator at the Bear River fire station comes on automatically in the event of a power failure.

There have been occasions in the past when both residents and businesses have been without power for several days.
