A winter’s worth of washed up waste is waiting for collection in Sandy Cove.
A dozen residents spent four of five hours on the Easter long weekend picking up trash from the Bay of Fundy beach.
Jenipher Rithcie of Sandy Cove wasn’t able to help out this year but has helped the last four or five years.
“This is such a terrific place for tourism,” says Ritchie who often walks her dogs Daisy, Taloulah and Misty on the big sandy crescent. “It’s very unattractive when all the trash is on the beach – you can’t really enjoy yourself.”
Different people help every year she says.
“It’s just organized by word of mouth and we just go down to the beach with garbage bags.”
They used a 6-wheeled John Deere gator to haul the garbage up to a landing above the beach.
The pile includes a lot of plastic and polyethylene rope. A couch and a washing machine were added last year after the municipal hauler had already taken away the beach garbage. This year someone has added a pile of small blocks of wood and a kitchen sink.
Greg Thomas of Digby Salvage and Disposal has volunteered his truck and time to pick up the trash. He hasn’t been able to get to Sandy Cove yet as his weekends have been full with white metal pick ups, but he thinks next weekend looks good.
“It’s really fantastic that the municipality and Greg picks this up and takes it away for us,” say Rithcie. “It’s great that everyone does what they can to help.”
